Individuality
I am absolutely venomous this morning.
I walk into my daughters bedroom this morning and ask her to please hurry or we will be late for the schoolbus. She informs me she is looking for two white socks. She always likes to mismatch her socks so I ask " Why"?. She then explains to me that her uncle told her not to wear different colored footwear as it makes her look like a poor child.
I am completely incensed by this statement.
First off, all of her clothing is clean and in good repair. Everytime I buy the child new socks, she doesn't like them bundled together matched, she prefers me to separate them so she can pick which colors to wear on any given day. She has done this ever since she was able to voice her opinion on the subject. She will do this with her clothes too. It is not unusual for her to pick a green top and a pink skirt, she is expressing herself.
Children do this, it is completely natural in their quest to find out who they are and what they like. There is a boy at her school that likes to dress as Anime characters. I have seen him wear goggles, capes, bandanas, funky cool colors, spiked hair the works. I think that is so cool!
That comment only has one purpose, to break down her self esteem and make her feel bad about herself. Shame on you! I don't make her wear black gothic clothing, even though that is my preference. She chooses bright colors and I am fine with that, it makes her happy. She is her own person! I asked her how that comment made her feel, she said it made her sad. Direct quote, " I like to wear two different socks, it makes me feel like a rainbow". Awwwwww.
